Kidney Damage Problems In Diabetes

Diabetes may damage small blood vessels in the kidneys, and this can result in kidney disease and failure. People with insulin dependent diabetes are at particular risk of some degree of kidney disease. If the kidneys fail altogether (a very serious, potentially fatal, condition called end stage renal failure), the individual concerned will need dialysis or a kidney transplant This is why testing the urine for early signs of kidney trouble is an important part of diabetic management. The risk of kidney problems may be reduced by blood pressure control.

Other complications which can occur in the long term can include cataracts, thickening of the skin, contraction of the joints and delayed growth at puberty in children. These are not common.
