Buttermilk Doughnuts Recipe

Ingredients:

3 1/4 cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 ground nutmeg

1/2 teaspoon salt

2 slightly beaten eggs

1/2 cup sugar

2 tablespoons butter or margarine, melted

1 cup buttermilk or sour milk

Shortening or cooking oil for deep-fat frying

 

Method

In a mixing bowl, stir together the flour, baking soda, baking powder, nutmeg, and salt; set aside. In a larger mixer bowl beat eggs and sugar till thick and lemon colored. Stir in melted butter or margarine. Add flour mixture and buttermilk or sour milk alternately to egg mixture; beat just till blended after each addition. Cover; chill dough about 2 hours.

 

Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Roll to 1/2-inch thickness; cut with a 2 1/2-inch doughnut cutter. Fry in deep, hot fat (375o) about 1 minute per side or till golden, turning once. Drain on paper toweling. While warm, sprinkle with additional sugar, if desired. Makes 18.
