Storing Fruits

Fruit should go in a large fruit bowl placed within the reach of children. Keep the more fragile fruits, like berries and melons, on a low shelf in the fridge — but not too close to fresh cheese, which could pick up strong flavors.

Storing Meat

Unwrap immediately and take care to remove any powdery bone dust, which sticks to meat that has been but by machine. Also remove bits of parsley. Sliced meat, such as chops and steak, should be sandwiched together so as to minimise the surface open to the air, then wrapped tightly in plastic and placed in the meat tray or on the highest shelf of the fridge.

When you return from shopping out the fresh foods carefully away in their place, to maintain maximum freshness until they are used. In order to help your children help you, show them at an early stage where things go in the kitchen. Then when you cook they will take pride in getting things out for you.

For storing vegetables such as potatoes, onions, garlic, unripe tomatoes and whole pumpkins, store them in a dry, cool spot. Many people store them in plastic racks in the dry food cupboard. Leave green vegetables in vented plastic bags and place in the vegetable crisper at the bottom of the fridge. All other vegetables are stored here too.

Many foods, even left-overs, make suitable and interesting fondue dippers. Cut dippers into bite-size pieces. A general guideline is to allow 10 to 12 pieces per serving for appetizer fondues. Try these dippers.

Tower or ring gelatin salads aren’t tricky to unmold if you follow these steps and helpful hints.  To begin, with the tip of a small paring knife or spatula, loosen the edges of the gelatin from the mold (and around the center of the ring mole).

Then, dip the mold just to the rim in warm water for a few seconds. Tilt slightly to ease gelatin away from one side and let air. Tilt and rotate mold so air can loosen gelatin all the way around.

Next, center an upside-down serving plate and mold together. Shake mold gently. Lift off the mold, being careful not to tear the gelatin. If the salad doesn’t slide out easily,  repeat the process, beginning with the first step.

  • Cut the cooking time of meat loaves by shaping them into small round loaves in a baking pan, or by baking the meat in muffin cups.
  • Shape ground meat into patties. Place two pieces of waxed paper between each patty; wrap, label, and freeze. The next time you need burgers in a hurry, you can remove just the number you need from the freezer. Individual patties thaw faster than 1-pound packages of ground meat, too.
  • If making meatballs is a bother, here are two ways to make shaping them fast and simple. Shape the meat mixture into a log and cut off slices. These slices will roll easily into balls. Or, pat the meat into a square and cut it into cubes. The cubes also roll easily into evenly sized meatballs.
  • Skip last-minute food preparation by making casseroles ahead. Most casseroles can be made and chilled up to 24 hours before cooking. Just add 15 to 20 minutes to the normal cooking time.
  • Serve one-dish meals such as meat and vegetable combination frequently. They save cooking, serving, and cleanup time.
  • Before freezing meat and poultry leftovers, cut up the meat as specified in the recipe you intend to use measure out the correct amount. Wrap, seal and label with recipe use.
