Our kitchen usually reflects our lifestyle. A kitchen should be a light, pleasant and comfortable room that stimulates an interest in cooking and good communication. A family kitchen should be sufficiently spacious to welcome children during meal-preparation and to allow for the inclusion of a table within the room itself.
A double sink is always handy and I prefer a wall oven to a low-level one, for it is more convenient for the cook as well as being out of reach of young children. A kitchen that opens out onto the living area enables the cook to communicate freely with other members of the family while working. A large window overlooking the backyard provides a pleasant outlook and brings lots of natural light into the room. It is also useful for keeping an eye on younger members of the family playing outside.
A kitchen seems to work best when the sink stands somewhere between the work bench and stove. These three elements should not be too far apart so as to economise on legwork, and the stove and oven should be very close to one another.
